Hockey and Culture Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Hockey and Culture - Essay Example The weight of capitalism as it diminishes the value of the sport is palpable in the discourse of hockey and how the same has become an industry manifested through capitalist agendas. For example, the strict traffic regulation in Gananoque which prohibits informal sports in the street indicates to the stifling of grassroots sport. ââ¬Å"The push is on towards organization and commercial interests: join the league, pay a fee, buy this equipment, consume! If you wonââ¬â¢t cooperate: pay a fine! (Genosko, p.239). Furthermore, an appreciation of hockey would be amiss without reference to its history which is marked by discrimination. ââ¬Å"Hockey was, in fact, the last North American sport to have Black athletes enter its ranks (ibid, p.235). The references to the white culture and the masculine stereotypes generally endure and prevail in hockey. But while there is not a shortage of informative and astute considerations in the essay, there remains the uniting factor that appeals to the emotional requisites that reasonably make sports endearing. Though athletes use their position while at the height of fame to maneuver into more lucrative endeavors after their hockey stints, Genosko does not fail to see how this is woeful rather than contemptible. ââ¬Å"Round, tepid, greasy food sitting in pools of fat, like pucks on melting iceâ⬠(Genosko, p. 233). The trend that inclines players to fast food has become evident. The same perception goes to the prohibition on the streets. This did not stop young people but instead fuels their imagination to create new landscapes and find other ways and venues to continue an immemorial tradition of stripped-down sports. The flow of the information was well developed and incorporates a number of aspects without going overboard by exhausting every detail.

Marcus Mosiah Garveys Movement Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Marcus Mosiah Garveys Movement - Essay Example According to the report findings Garvey visited Ecuador, Costa Rica and Panama, where he worked as an editor for some radical newspapers, during the early moments of service. Garveyââ¬â¢s keen interest in Africa and that of its history came about after his visit to England, where he mingled with several African nationalists. In a number of the countries that Garvey visited, he acknowledged that the black man was on inferior levels, subject to the continuous changing ideals of stronger races. The writings of Booker T. Washington on ââ¬Å"Up from slaveryâ⬠also contributed greatly to the interventions that Garvey sought to bring. His endeavors got a boost after meeting a Sudanese-Egyptian supporter of Africa self-rule, Duse Mohammed Ali, who employed him, thus ensuring his interaction with other black activists. As the the essay stresses the organization appealed to the black community to return to Africa for the development of a great nation. He knew that until this was attainable, Africans had to make themselves economically stable and independent in their respective areas of residence. He further encouraged black communities to start their own business in the various ghettos that they dominated. In accordance to his basic principle and the belief that each race had to see God through its own racial eyes, Garvey together with Archbishop George McGuire started the African Orthodox Church. Official announcement of the Black Madonna and the Black Christ then took place in the UNIA convention of 1924.

Mangment 3000 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Mangment 3000 - Essay Example Another factor which can motivate me is the rewards and complements. I always like to deliver 100% in my profession. But if my efforts gone unnoticed or unrecognized, then my enthusiasm might gradually decrease. On the other hand if my outstanding works were properly rewarded or complemented, I will definitely increase my productivity knowingly and unknowingly. I would like to build up my career in my organization and all my efforts were primarily focussed on attaining higher places in my organization. So promotion is the best way of rewarding me for my outstanding performances. I know it is impossible for an organization to reward me with promotions always. Incentives, complements, nice words etc can also motivate me. Managers should have some idea about the motivating factors of their employees. Some employees may be satisfied with incentives or cash rewards while some others may need complements or recognitions. The awareness about these individual differences in motivating factors of the employees will help the manager to make custom made strategies for motivating his subordinates. My perceptions about my profession and my organization are very clear. I work for contributing something meaningful to my organization and for that purpose it is important for me to attain higher places in organization. Moreover, I would like to utilize all my talents for the growth of my society through my organization. I have lot of ideas and perceptions about the changes needed in my organization. I would like to participate actively in my organizationââ¬â¢s policy making and decision making bodies. I know very well that I can contribute a lot to my organization if I attain higher places in my organization. I know very well that it is difficult for an organization to reward each and every outstanding works. For example, while working in a group, collective efforts are often required

The Crucible by Arthur Miller Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
The Crucible by Arthur Miller - Coursework Example The Crucible is known as a parable, this mean there can be a direct link made between the events of the 17th Century witch trials, to the Communist ââ¬Ëwith huntsââ¬â¢ in the United States that occurred at the time Miller wrote the play. The first US production of The Crucible occurred in January 1953, this was a time of the Red Scare where Senator John McCarthy made false allegations of Communism against various people, this particularly affected people in the Arts and film industry who were know to hold more Leftist views. Miller comments that the propaganda of McCarthyism, the Red Scare and Communism ââ¬Å"from the far Right was capable of creating not only a terror, but a new subjective realityâ⬠(39). Miller speaks of himself being astounded within the McCarthy era by how fear, an ââ¬Å"interior and subjective an emotion could have been so manifestly created from withoutâ⬠(40). Miller describes John Proctor as intelligent, physically strong, rationale and stab le. With particular reference to his state of mind heââ¬â¢s described as ââ¬Å"even temperedâ⬠with a ââ¬Å"steady mannerâ⬠(239). Yet, despite this outward appearance there is a sense of him feeling hypocritical from having sinned, and it is said that he ââ¬Å"has come to regard himself as a kind of fraud.â⬠(239). He is shown as determined to put an end to any previous relationships with Abigail in a polite but determined manner, this is indicated by the stage directions, ââ¬Å"PROCTOR, gently pressing her from him, with great sympathy but firmlyâ⬠(241). Proctorââ¬â¢s guilt for being disloyal to Elizabeth is show by anger when Abigail mentions her. Proctor is shown to be a rationale man who doesnââ¬â¢t believe in all the nonsense about devils and heââ¬â¢s a person who speaks his mind: ââ¬Å"I may speak my heart, I thinkâ⬠(246). Proctorââ¬â¢s relationship with Elizabeth is awkward, they initially make formal small-talk about food and w ork, but there is evident strain in their relationship, evident when he says to her ââ¬Å"I mean to please youâ⬠and she finds it difficult to acknowledge ââ¬Å"I know it Johnâ⬠(262). When he kisses her she is disappointed. There is a sense of duty perceived from Elizabeth as she performs her housewife role, and an expectation from Proctor. As their conversation turns more argumentative, Proctor is described as ââ¬Å"Angry and Stubbornâ⬠whilst Elizabeth is ââ¬Å"quietâ⬠¦coldâ⬠¦and lost all faithâ⬠(264). Elizabeth is still suspicious of Proctor, whilst he is fed up feeling guilty and judged by her. Proctor learns that the total accused women has increased form 14 ââ¬â 39 and that one of the ladies has been sentenced to hang. It is indicated that Elizabethââ¬â¢s name was mentioned too. He finds the whole accusations ridiculous when good honest religious women are accused, and elderly women too. As the scene progresses and he is tested on the c ommandments ââ¬â he begins to take the threat more seriously. When Proctor is talking to Hale about the girlsââ¬â¢ lies he says: ââ¬Å"There are them that will swear to anything before theyââ¬â¢ll hangâ⬠(275). He thinks if Hale does not believe him, that others in court may not too. When Cheever arrives with a warrant for Elizabeth and mentions the poppet, Mary is summoned. Proctorââ¬â¢

The World Wide Web Bubble Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
The World Wide Web Bubble - Research Paper Example The essay "The World Wide Web Bubble" describes the reasons and consequences of one of the speculative bubbles, which took place within the time period of 1997 to 2000. The venture capitalists found record-setting growth in the internet sector as the dot-com companies were experiencing a meteoric rise in the stock prices and as a result, moving faster with reduced caution than usual. These companies chose to mitigate the risk by the start-up of many contenders and left it up to the market to decide that which would turn out to be successful. The low rate of interest within the period of 1998-99 has helped in increasing the total startup capital amount. Some of these dot-com companies had their business model built in such manner which relied mostly on harnessing their network effects by means of conducting operations at a sustainable net loss for the purpose of building the market share. These companies provided their services or their end products to the customers without any costs. They did this with expectation of building enough brand awareness that would help them to charge profitable rates in future. In the financial market, the stock market bubble means a self-perpetuating increase or downfall in the share prices of the stocks of any industry. The bubble occurs in the financial market when the speculators find that there is a rapid increase in the stock value and they plan to buy the stock with the perception that it would rise in future as well rather than because of the fact that these shares are undervalued. Because of this fact many companies were becoming overvalued (grossly). It is due to this reason that when bubble bursts and the share prices come down drastically, many companies

Aviation Cyber Threats Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words
Aviation Cyber Threats - Essay Example However, there were several laws that were passed in the congress after September 11 terrorist attacks. In the process, a series of homeland security presidential directives were issued for sustaining domestic security (Vacca, 2009). However, on the other hand, despite an economic turmoil from September 11 attacks, the aviation industry continues to grow at a rapid pace and is considered as a fundamental transformation. Moreover, there is also a significant change for managing air traffic via net-centric approach (Markarian, Kolle, & Tarter, n.d). The acquisition of this change will replace the traditional approach for controlling air traffic that is constructed on Information technology solutions. By focusing on aviation security, there is a significant increase in utilizing computerized systems onboard of an air carrier. Likewise, these systems facilitate high airborne and internally located system connectivity, operational and maintenance requirements (Markarian, Kolle, & Tarter, n.d). Moreover, the net-centric ATM connectivity raises concerns for cyber security threats and vulnerabilities. Propagation threats are critical because it is capable of rapidly broadcasting traffic on the Internet along with bypassing intrusion detection systems (Hatahet, Bouabdallah, & Challal, 2010). Likewise, for augmenting the primary phase of work propagation, it uses a ââ¬Ëhit listââ¬â¢ comprising of overflowed users i.e. users consuming heavy bandwidth. By identifying users, worm spreads itself at a rapid pace when compared to traditional spreading worms (Hatahet, Bouabdallah, & Challal, 2010). Moreover, this type of attack saves a considerable amount of scanning time by only attacking a visible target. In the context of any cyber threat to an airport, the airport cannot be the primary target, as the Spanair flight JK5022 crash was successful by one of the contributions from a Malware (Markarian, Kolle, & Tarter, n.d). System Wide Information Management (SWIM) that is a program for delivering foundation that is vital for renewing the national airspace system in to an operation that is represented as ââ¬Ënetwork-centricââ¬â¢ (Markarian, Kolle, & Tarter, n.d). Likewise the SWIM is sponsored by the umbrella of SESAR for Europe and in the United states, it is sponsored by NextGen. Commonly, the SWIM program is stated as ââ¬Ëaviation intranetââ¬â¢ (Markarian, Kolle, & Tarter, n.d). Likewise, by utilizing ââ¬Ëpublish and subscribe mechanismsââ¬â¢, the intranet will demonstrate a ââ¬Ënet- centricââ¬â¢ approach. Apart from all these advantages, there are always cyber threats that are associated with it. As mentioned earlier about the net-centric approach, that will utilize point to point connectivity, any single vulnerability will result in a complete network compromise because of distributed application and network resources. Aviation information systems must be resilient, redundant, ensure integrity of data and most importantly ââ¬Ëalways availableââ¬â¢. These features are associated with safety principles that are applicable to operational functions in the aviation industry. For instance, control messages are communicated from the control tower to the pilot, who is one of the crew members on the flight. Any mistake or manipulation in communicated messages may result in a catastrophic event or disaster that may
Spartacus 1960 - Defining freedom and evoking compassion Essay
Spartacus 1960 - Defining freedom and evoking compassion - Essay Example A gut wrenching storyline within the movie revolves around Tony Curtis, playing Antoninus, who is a beautiful young man who is put in a position to have his sexuality compromised by powerful Roman citizen, Marcus Licinius Crassus, played by Laurence Olivier. The central scene that creates the insinuation was cut from the original film but was later restored on DVD, giving a powerful new dimension to the character Antoninus that Curtis portrayed. Antoninus can now be viewed as a symbol for those who are sexually enslaved, who cannot say no for one reason or another, and are and have been victimized throughout history. His vulnerability can be seen to represent those whose bodies are used without consent, including slaves, children, and women who have been oppressed as the possessions of men through history. As a viewer, one is driven towards a protective emotional state when Curtis is threatened by sexual victimization. Spartacus was a powerful gladiator, however it was not his physic al strength that made him a formidable leader, but his cunning in using what could be found along their travels in order to combat the Roman forces. The story of Spartacus informs the viewer of the possibilities of the human spirit, while revealing the darkness that can come from having power over another person. Watching Spartacus (1960) is like experiencing a bittersweet triumph, the heart breaking as he dies, but the spirit soaring on the wings of his accomplishment in freeing the hearts of so many.
